About The Play

Dramedy.  Flexible cast of 10-30+.  35-55 minutes (the play is written so that certain scenes may be removed).  Suitable for middle school and older.

Developed specifically for teen performers at the Choate Rosemary Hall Summer Arts Conservatory (Wallingford, CT).

This play is published, but regrettably, the publisher refuses to provide me with contact information for the productions of my own plays.  Therefore, please email me, and I will give you their information.  For producers in the United Kingdom, I am able to license to you directly.

"Dear Chuck was an incredible experience for the actors and for me as the director. It brought up questions about life choices, peer relationships and guidance from adults as well as formed a bond among the participants that will be lifelong. We wouldn't trade the time for anything." - Margaret Foot, Maret School (Washington, DC)

"The show was a hit! The kids had a great time, as well as did the audience. Please know that your insights into the junior and senior high experience are right on." - Mary Shaffer, Lake Harriet United Methodist Church (Minneapolis, MN)

Synopsis

Teenagers are typically caught in the middle--they're not quite adults, but they're definitely no longer children. Through a series of scenes and monologues, we meet an eclectic group of teen characters: a boy trying to retake the kiddie pool at the local swim club, teens meeting with various success in their shopping attempts, the friends of a boy who has committed suicide, a girl trying to keep up with her wealthy private school friends, another dealing with a skinhead classmate--and many others. What they all have in common is the search for their "Chuck," that elusive moment of knowing who you are.

Rumors of Polar Bears:

Though the one-act version, available from Playscripts, stands on its own (and is perfect for competition!), this play was always intended to be a full-length composed of three acts:  Rumors of Polar Bears, Ursa Major and Northern Lights.  Look for the other two plays in the cycle sometime in 2012.
